We've been closer before Than we are now And I hope we'll be closer again We've been closer before Than we are now And I hope we'll be closer again But if we are Wouldn't it be far too bewildering to figure That the time we're most Geographically close Is the time when we are most severed? We've been closer before Than we are now And I hope we'll be closer again We've been closer before Than we are now And I hope we get closer again But if we do Wouldn't it be too Ironical beyond measure That the time our hearts Are furthest apart Is the time when we're closest together? People drift apart and away as sure as they drift towards one another It's a natural thing of which i sing like the seasons and the weather It's Good to change You shouldn't stay the same for the sake of another's pleasure But I hope one day We remember the way That we felt when we wrote those letters And as the feeling returns For a moment it burns And we'll hug for what feels like forever As we recollect and our eyes connect And we reclaim our buried treasure We've been closer before Than we are now And I hope we'll be closer again We've been closer before Than we are now And I hope we'll be closer again But if we're not at least I've got Something that's warm, sweet and clever The person you'll be Eternally Inside my mind, whatever

Woke up this morning with a smile upon my face Full of all goodwill towards the entire human race Rushed out my house to joyfully greet The first perfect strangers I’d meet Unfortunately they turned out to be a pair of lovers Whose body language made it clear they cared not much for others Couples holding hands Couples holding hands There’s nothing more obnoxious than couples holding hands Couples holding hands Couples holding hands There’s nothibng more obnoxious than couples holding hands I never found true love, I should be glad for those who did Congratulations! Then again, who are you trying to kid? Half of you ain’t found true love, you’re only being phoney You do it just to irritate and to make us feel lonely Couples holding hands Couples holding hands There’s nothing more annoyingthan couples holding hands Couples holding hands Couples holding hands There’s nothing more soul-destroying than couples holding hands And seemingly one half of each hand-holding happy item Seems actually quite ill-at-ease as the clinch is tightened "Hey Girls, Hey boys, hands off my fella He’s mine, all mine, can’t afford a collar" Couples holding hands Couples holding hands There’s nothing more frustrating than couples holding hands Couples holding hands Couples holding hands There’s nothing more infuriating than couples holding hands I had a girlfriend, just for a spell I thought, "just this once, I’ll try it as well My hand was sweaty, unpleasant to the touch" But that doesn’t mean I didn’t like her! No! Couples holding hands Couples holding hands There’s nothing more vexatious than couples holding hands Couples holding hands Couples holding hands What throws me in to rages like couples holding hands? I don’t really mean it I don’t really mean it I was being facetious I don’t really mean it All couples are beautiful All couples are lovely They’re so sweet Aaah Blah blah blah….

There’s too many Titians in this exhibition of women being ravished by Zeus Too many Rubenses full of exuberant psychotic gods on the loose Too many boring postcards of Venice So-called “still lifes”, of piles of dead pheasants And sad suicides of fair maidens defiled And oh, there’s another Madonna and Child Same old scenes So often the same old stupid scenes Same old themes When they could have painted their wildest dreams There’s too much pornography pretending not to be, posing as moral instruction There’s too many hazy daubs by Veronese, not enough Bruegel concoctions There’s St Sebastian’s harrowing fate And Holofernes’s head on a plate Nondescript classicised portrait busts Naked girls showing the perils of lust Same old scenes From the Byzantines to the Nazarenes Same old scenes When they could have painted their wildest dreams

We said we’d never wear beige We said we’d never wear beige If living must result In turning into an adult At least we’d never act our age We said we’d never wear beige We’d never reach that stage Never let our glamour drop When the party has to stop And conformity is all the rage I didn’t realise that when we were apart We were taking different routes I didn’t realise that while I took to art You took to wearing puce I thought we said, I thought we said I thought we said, I thought we said I thought we said, I thought we said We’d never be caught dead You said you’d never wear beige You said you’d never wear beige And you’re surprised that I’m appalled I can’t believe you have the gall To act as though nothing has changed How can you stand there in beige How can you stand there in beige You traitor

This land is your land, this land is my land From Cornish Land’s End to the Scottish Highlands And the country is one small island Between two seas a slender slip of dry land A toast! A toast! Scarborough, Clacton, Ilfracombe, Strumble Head Cromer, Whitley Bay, Stonehaven, Troon, Redcar, Eyemouth, Flanborough Head The shells and seaweed, the harbours and beaches The waves a-crash and the seagull a-screeches King Lear’s valedictory speeches The United Kingdom’s outermost reaches A toast! Beachy Head, Foulness Point, Milford Haven, Pwlgwaelod Brighton, Robin Hood’s Bay, Banff, Nairn, Butt of Lewis The lonely lighthouses the cavernous caves The King Canute-defying roar of the waves That brought Dunwich to a watery grave And one day will do even London great scath A toast!
