about

Token Waltz

lyrics

There’s too many Titians in this exhibition of women being ravished by Zeus
Too many Rubenses full of exuberant psychotic gods on the loose
Too many boring postcards of Venice
So-called “still lifes”, of piles of dead pheasants
And sad suicides of fair maidens defiled
And oh, there’s another Madonna and Child

Same old scenes
So often the same old stupid scenes
Same old themes
When they could have painted their wildest dreams

There’s too much pornography pretending not to be, posing as moral instruction
There’s too many hazy daubs by Veronese, not enough Bruegel concoctions
There’s St Sebastian’s harrowing fate
And Holofernes’s head on a plate
Nondescript classicised portrait busts
Naked girls showing the perils of lust

Same old scenes
From the Byzantines to the Nazarenes
Same old scenes
When they could have painted their wildest dreams
